professional restraint to protect the environment
WHG linings and coatings
- WHG coatings: Mandatory for LAU facilities (legally required)
- Petrol stations (filling areas, fuel dispensers)
- Heating oil basements and private/commercial tank facilities (containment basins)
- Chemical plants and electroplating facilities
- Warehouses for hazardous substances, paints, or waste oils
- Underground car parks and workshops (protection against fuels and oils)
- Biogas plants and silo installations
- WHG protection must permanently withstand extreme loads:
- Chemical resistance: e.g. highly concentrated acids or solvents
- Crack bridging: Concrete shifts and can develop fine cracks; a WHG coating is elastic enough to bridge these.
- Liquid impermeability
- Mechanical resistance: e.g. from forklift or truck traffic
- WHG coating vs. WHG lining
- WHG coating: consists of liquid polymers applied to the concrete in multiple layers (primer, intermediate/self-levelling layer, seal coat) using rollers or trowels.
- WHG lining: consists of prefabricated sheets or membranes (often made of special plastics like PE, PP, or PVC). They are mechanically fastened, welded together, and primarily used in large, deep pits, tanks, or channels.
WHG linings and coatings are highly specialized protective systems for floors, walls, or containment basins that are regulated by law as preventive environmental protection (AT: Water Rights Act 1959 (WRG); DE: Water Resources Act (WHG); EU: EU Water Framework Directive (WFD)). They reliably prevent water-polluting substances (such as oils, fuels, acids, alkalis, or chemicals) from penetrating into the soil or groundwater by safely containing escaping liquid until it can be properly disposed of.
